Susan Russell Hall and Terry Rishel began their artistic collaboration in 2019. They combined encaustic painting and photography to explore emotional depths and beauty in the everyday world. The challenge centered on how to represent this hybrid process.
The resolution of representing the hybrid of two distinct forms of image-making relied on two main approaches. The first was to embrace two layout systems: a traditional grid and margin system for the text section and a contemporary arrangement of the margins and layout for the plate section.
The second decision focused on details of the paintings. These details emphasized the distinct differences between digital printing and the encaustic brushwork. By generously focusing on a specific detail, readers could better understand why the collaboration was successful.
Lastly, there is a small "Easter egg" for astute readers. The words "unlikely" and "collaboration" alternate between pages of the text section as another reminder of the artist's unique approach.
